Notice of FBA Tucson Chapter Seminar - January 25, 2016

Following notice is on behalf of the President, FBA Tucson Chapter:

The impact of pro se litigants on our trial, bankruptcy and appellate courts in the Ninth Circuit is very significant. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has an unrepresented litigant in 50% of its civil appeals. The District of Arizona is second in the Circuit with 38% of its civil filings having a pro se litigant. In the District of Arizona Bankruptcy Court, 22% of petitioners are proceeding pro se. All attorneys need to be aware of what the court is doing to respond to the increased number of pro se litigants, and what lawyers can do to increase fairness and reduce exasperation.

On Monday, January 25, 2016, the William D. Browning Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is sponsoring a seminar at the James A. Walsh United States Courthouse, 38 North Scott, Tucson. The seminar will run from 2:00 - 4:15 PM in Judge Scott Gan's courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse. Afterwards, there will be a hosted reception on the first floor.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Maureen Tighe will explain interesting new procedures the Central District of California is using to assist pro se litigants. There will be a demonstration of technology that can assist the pro se litigant in understanding and traversing the court process with less frustration for court and counsel. Finally, there will be a panel discussion of suggestions to make the process better for counsel, the parties and the court. 2.0 hours of CLE, with 1.0 hours of ethics, available; $20 for FBA members and $30 for non-members.

Come learn about what the court and counsel should do, meet lawyers and judges from a different practice area, and see where Dean Charles Ares and Fred Kay registered for the draft. Hope to see you January 25, 2016.
